Outpatient Total Hips and Knees

Outpatient Total Hips and Knees

Total hips and knees can be performed in selective patients on an outpatient basis. The patient will have home nursing and home physical therapy for a short period of time before proceeding to an outpatient therapy. The patient must be compliant with his/her family physician and be in relatively good health. BMI must be under 40 and have support at home. Patients are generally happier at home after surgery than in a hospital or rehab facility. The home has less antibiotic-resistant bacteria, so postop infection rate is less for patients going home.
