Outpatient Total Hips and Knees

Outpatient Total Hips & Knees

Total hips and knees can be performed in selective patients on an outpatient basis. The patient will have home nursing and home physical therapy for a short period of time before proceeding to an outpatient therapy. This must be arranged prior to surgery. The patient must be compliant with his/her family physician. They need to be in relatively good health and not severely overweight. BMI (Body Mass Index) must be under 40. They must have support at home with someone staying with them for at least the first week after surgery. Patients are generally happier at home after surgery than in a hospital or rehab facility. The home has less antibiotic-resistant bacteria, so postop infection rate is less for patients going home.

It is also more economical for the patient to have surgery on an outpatient basis. It saves patients the cost of staying overnight as an inpatient with extra labs and charges.
